Tagging the images in Open Intro

lnussdor

Greetings, I was starting to make the pdf of the course Open Intro to Statistics accessible by tagging the pdf in Adobe. That was successful, when I went to tag the images, I noticed that the "E" and "G" that introduces Exercises and Guided Practices are appearing as images. 2 questions, has someone already globally tagged the images in the pdf? If not, is there a copy of the pdf that already has the E and G tagged as decorative images? Thank you!

David

Hi, we have a PDF version of the book specifically for screen readers that strips out the more complex visual formatting that might make navigation with a screen reader more difficult, adds very detailed alternative text for images including detailed graph descriptions, removes decorative images, adds simple text declaring the start and end of guided practice and examples (something that the visually able can see by design in the original PDF but that wouldn't be apparent to a screenreader), and provides an expanded table of contents. The decorative images you noted are not in this version of the PDF.

The version friendly for screen readers is linked near the top of the OpenIntro Statistics textbook's page under the link "FREE -- Book PDF Best for Screen Readers". If you find any issues regarding this version of the text for accessibility needs, please let us know so that we can make improvements. A significant amount of time was spent on updating the textbook source files to enable this version of the PDF.

I hope that helps!

Best,
David
